The History of the Funicular

The idea of creating a funicular-driven car traveling on a route that connected Mercogliano with Montevergine came from Abbot Guglielmo De Cesare, who imagined a fast connection to visit the Mamma Schiavona monastery and enjoy the lush mountain landscape. The work in 1882 quickly reached two-thirds of completion, but subsequently suffered severe delays in completion.

We have to wait until 1926 when the successor of Abbot De Cesare, Don Ramiro, set up a company called "Partenion" which on 25 April of the same year began work on the construction of the departure station.

In 1929 the company was taken over entirely by the Benedictine Community which, under the name of Società Immobiliare Irpina (SII), obtained the fifty-year concession for the operation of the plant with effect from 17 July 1931.

On 23 June 1956 Abbot Anselmo Tranfaglia inaugurated the funicular.

Even before the expiry of the concession, in November 1973, the Ministry of Transport ordered the closure of the year due to the increasingly evident deterioration of the structure.

The high management costs meant that in the first months of 1976 there was the transfer of the operating concession from the Irpinia Real Estate Company to the Atripalda-Avellino-Mercogliano Filovia, a publicly managed regional transport company of Avellino, which closed the plant for work until May 23, 1981.

At the expiry of the fifty-year agreement, the Campania Region purchased the company (which at the same time had taken on the name of SpA Funicolare Montevergine) as the Consorzio Servizi Publici di Trasporti Urbano and Extraurbano of Avellino and subsequently, with resolution 6810 of 1 October 1986, entrusted to the same management of companies in the sector, including the funicular.

On 16 January 1988 the Region established the unification of the Funicular Company (which ceased its independent activity) with that of the extra-urban services.

The plant still represents the flagship of the AIR CAMPANIA company.
